About Why Can't They See Real Me
It is important as parents and teachers that we separate the behaviors our children choose from who they really are. So often we hear adults tellingĀ children they are lazy, naughty, frustrating, annoying etc. Our children are not these things. It is the behavior that they have chosen. If we label our children in this way, we are saying that their behavior is a part of their character. For a child these statements can be very burdensome and cause them to feel a hopelessness about being able to change. If we are saying it is who they are, then how can they change it? If we separate the behavior from who they are, we are empowering them to choose not to exhibit the behavior. It is like taking off an article of clothing or choosing not to wear it. As parents and teachers it is our job to encourage our children to be the best that they can be, while giving them the tools to succeed.
